Bookness Creative Writing Awards 2024

Entry Fee: $5.50 per poem or short story.

Poems must be at least 16 lines in length and no longer than 50 lines. Short Stories must be a maximum of 500 words.

Participants may submit more than one poem or short story, but each new entry must have a separate entry form and is $5.50 for each entry.

Entries should comprise of 2 documents: The Entry Form and a separate word document with the poem / short story. Only emailed submissions accepted. The poem / short story document must not show the participant’s name, just the Title and the word length.

ALL submissions must include a completed entry form and are to be emailed to: [email protected] with the subject line as: ‘Attention Dr Michael Brohier’ by 4pm on Wednesday 31st July 2024.

Only Longlisted / Shortlisted winning entries will receive comments from the Judge.

Entries will not be returned to participants.

A maximum of 10 Longlisted Poems and 5 Longlisted Short Stories will be selected and Judge’s comments will be provided for these works. There will be 3 Shortlisted Poems and 3 Short Stories selected from this Longlist.

There will be one overall winner for Poetry and one overall winner for Short Story writing.

All Longlisted will be notified by email and invited to the Presentation Afternoon.

Longlisted entrants will receive a Certificate and Judge’s comments on the poem and short story. Shortlisted entrants will receive a Certificate, Judge’s extended comments on the poem and short story, and a voucher from Bookness.

The Overall Winners for both categories will receive a Certificate, Judge’s comments, a cash prize of $200 and a trophy. The winning entries will be on display at Bookness. The Poem and Short Story will then be posted on Bookness media at the conclusion of the awards.

Presentations will be made at a special event to be held at Bookness, Shop 1, 60 Railway Street, Mudgeeraba on Saturday 17th August 2024 from 3 pm. Entry winners are cordially invited to bring friends and family to this event.

Next Steps to Enter:

Step 1 - Buy entry tickets on Eventbrite (one ticket for each entry)

Step 2 - Bookness will email you (within 24 hours) the Entry Form to complete for each submission.

Step 3 - Email through to Bookness at [email protected] the completed Entry Form accompanied with the Poem or Short Story. The Poem / Short Story document must not have the participant’s name, just the Title and word length.

Step 4 - You will receive confirmation that your submission is received, and goodluck!
