About this Event
On this one day workshop you will learn how to use the tools, materials and techniques to get you started in bookbinding. You’ll make books from scratch to take away with you using methods such as pamphlet stitch and stab binding and you will gain some knowledge to keep making books at home.
Bookbinding is great for creating notebooks, sketchbooks, albums or books which are art objects in themselves.
What experience do I need?
No prior experience of bookbinding is required for this workshop. You'll learn the basics and will gain an understanding of different techniques in bookbinding. The workshop would be great for anyone with a creative practice that can be enhanced by bookbinding skills, but this is guaranteed to be a fun day for anyone!
What will I make?
You will make at least three different kinds of books from scratch; these will include pamphlet stitch, stab binding, and a hardcover book.
Who is my tutor?
Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds Arts University, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking and bookbinding open to as many people as possible.
Do I need to bring anything?
All of the tools and equipment needed to make your books will be provided, along with a standard selection of coloured and cartridge paper.
If you have any paper of your own that you think would make an interesting book, please bring that along. You may also bring along any bookbinding tools that you have already to use alongside what we have in the workshop (ruler, craft knife, pencil etc.)
If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website .
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
