About this Event
Sunday 16 February THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Jonathan Demme 1991, 118 mins)
Brilliant psychiatrist-turned-cannibal killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter was first introduced in Thomas Harris’ second novel, Red Dragon, which was adapted into film in 1986 as Manhunter. However, it was Jonathan Demme’s 1991 adaptation of Harris’ third novel, The Silence of the Lambs, and Anthony Hopkins’ sinister portrayal of Lecter that made the malevolent doctor a household name.
Jonathan Demme began his career with exploitation films for Roger Corman (who cameos in The Silence of the Lambs as the head of the FBI), and in Lambs, blends Gothic, horror, and thriller elements into a stylish police procedural in which, as Lizzie Francke (Sight and Sound) observes, "a woman's psyche takes centre stage." Clarice Starling's emotional and psychological journey into an increasingly dark landscape is brought into stunning focus by Jodie Foster, who follows her Oscar win for The Accused with a career-defining performance that walks a razor's edge between steely-eyed determination and tightly-guarded fragility.
Upon release, The Silence of the Lambs became a sensation, winning all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay). It remains the only horror film to date to nab the Best Picture Oscar. Today, it stands as one of the defining films of modern American cinema, frequently quoted and referenced, and once seen, never forgotten.
