About this Event
The unlikely friendship of a couple of hustlers in New York City, based on James Leo Herlihy’s 1965 novel, went on to win Best Film and Best Director for John Schlesinger at the 1970 Academy Awards. Waldo Salt won best Adapted Screenplay and John Barry’s soundtrack, featuring Nilsson’s version of Fred Neil’s Everybody’s Talkin’, was much admired but it was the performances by Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman which won the highest praise. Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune wrote that he couldn’t recall a more marvelous pair of acting performances in any one film.
Some of the themes were considered confronting at the time and created intense negotiations as to whether the film would be released with an “R” or an “X” rating. And when Midnight Cowboy appeared on television five years later, 25 minutes had been cut from the original running time.
This session will be presented by John Newman and Michael O’Rourke who will host a discussion after this screening of one of director Akira Kurosawa’s favourite films.
The novel Midnight Cowboy is available in paperback, Kindle and Audible
