About this Event
Join us for an evening with New York Times bestselling author and presidential historian Jonathan Alter, who will be discussing his latest book, American Reckoning: Inside Trump's Trial - And My Own. The book is an eviscerating account of the ups and downs and colorful characters in the first ever criminal trial of a president. The event was untelevised and witnessed first-hand by only a few journalists like veteran political reporter Alter, who covered the trial for The New York Times. It is also a chronicle of how bracing and unpredictable relationships with other American politicians, including Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, about whom Alter has written over the course of his four decades in journalism, have shaped his thinking on democracy and the anti-democratic peril of Donald Trump. Alter is the author of biographies of Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, Franklin Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. He launched the newsletter "Old Goats,“ which is devoted to conversations with accomplished people of wisdom and experience.
Alter will be interviewed by John Hendrickson, a senior editor at The Atlantic, where he reports on politics and culture. His book , a reported memoir about his lifelong struggle to speak, was named one of the best books of 2023 by The New Yorker, one of the best audiobooks of the year by Audible. Hendrickson has appeared on CNN, NPR, BBC, PBS, and at colleges across the country.
Copies of American Reckoning can be purchased in advance and brought to the event to be signed by the author.
