ABOUT THE BOOK:
Fragments: Then & Now is a cultural memoir that gathers the best of a lifetime spent observing, questioning, and celebrating the Tallahassee community.
Drawing from four decades of newspaper columns - thousands of pieces written from the 1970s through 2011 - Mary Ann Lindley revisits the stories, trends, and moments that defined Tallahassee and Leon County's shared past.
As she sifted through 16 boxes of her writing, what began as an exercise in sorting became a rediscovery of history, both personal and collective. The result is a mosaic of “then” and “now,” where timeless reflections meet thoughtful updates on the people and ideas that once filled the headlines.
With elegant design, original artwork, and a deep reverence for language, Fragments: Then & Now invites readers to linger over the fragments of a life well observed, and a culture ever evolving.
Part coffee table book, part historical page turner.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mary Ann Lindley spent nearly four decades as a newspaper columnist, most notably with the Tallahassee Democrat, where her award-winning commentary explored Florida politics, community life, and American culture. A Missouri native, she began her journalism career at 16 and went on to earn a Curator’s Scholarship from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Over the years, she managed the New York Times’ Florida capital bureau, edited state news for The Miami Herald, and served as both columnist and editorial board chair for the Democrat. After leaving journalism in 2011, she served two terms on the Leon County Commission before returning to writing. She lives in Tallahassee with her husband, Charlie, and remains active in community work.
