Additional honors and awards include time as Past President of Blount County Trust, Jefferson County Historical Society Hall of Fame awardee, Commissioner on the Tennessee Historical Commission, and past member of the Tennessee Archaeology Council.
Joe Swann’s family has deep roots in East Tennessee, roots that inspire a passion for the region’s history. While his interest in history is broad, David Crockett holds a special place in his heart. As a child, Joe was introduced to David “Davy” Crockett through Fess Parker’s portrayal of the frontiersman, storyteller, and Congressman from the “Cane” in movies and on television. This interest in Crockett as portrayed on screen evolved into a lifelong exploration of David Crockett’s story as documented in original sources. He has spent most of his adult life researching archives and libraries to discover the historic Crockett. Enriching Joe’s personal interest is the fact that he owns “Betsy,” David Crockett’s rifle which is on loan to the East Tennessee Historical Society. Ownership of the rifle has descended in his family since the early nineteenth century; a fact that makes this lifelong journey even more special and important. The story of Joe’s journey and the Crockett he has come to know if the subject of his new book The Early Life and Times of David Crockett in East Tennessee: A Lifelong Study.
