“Save Every Life You Can: A Reflection on Leadership and Saving Lives During the COVID-19 Pandemic” was published in 2022 and written by Dr. Richard Stone. The Audible version debuted in 2023.
Dr. Stone led the nation’s largest health care system the Veterans Health Administration through the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Stone is the former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States Army. Dr. Stone returned to government service to lead the VHA at the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2018. This memoir describes the extraordinary challenges the VA faced during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as his thoughts on what we learned as a nation about health care delivery during the pandemic.
As the nation’s 18 million health care workers and the families of the million plus Americans who died from COVID-19 in the United States reflect on the pandemic’s impact and changes Dr. Stone’s book offers hard-won lessons amid moments of grief and triumph.
The book’s magic rests in revealing how Dr. Stone connected with others and continued to lead – at a time when human connection seemed impossible during the lockdown. Unable to travel Dr. Stone made daily video messages for VHA staff speaking from the heart. These impromptu messages prompted emotional (and grateful) reactions from beleaguered VHA employees who were struggling with how to save lives and do their jobs while caring for family members. At book signings across the U.S. former employees continue to come up to Dr. Stone and talk to him about these messages.
