Mahmood Karimi Hakak, is a poet, author, translator, and playwright whose scholarly and artistic works are focused on intercultural dialogue and peacebuilding. He is the founder and president of Free Culture Invisible www.freecultureinvisible.com. Mahmood has created over seventy stage and screen productions, in the U.S., Europe, and his native Iran. His artistic works have received international acclaim at such festivals as Tehran, Edinburgh, Netherlands, Delhi, Montreal, New York, and Los Angeles. Karimi Hakak is the recipient of five scholarly awards including Raymond C. Kennedy (2005) and US-Israel Fulbright (2009-10).
Karimi Hakak has authored seven plays, two books of poetry, five translations, and numerous reviews, interviews and articles, including Your Lover’s Beloved: 51 Ghazals by Hafez (with Bill Wolak), which was nominated for ALTA’s best translation of poetry in 2010. His translation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Persian poetry has reached its sixth edition. Karimi Hakak’s most recent play Is the One I Love Everywhere? (2021) is a dialogue between Jalal-al Din Rumi, Forough Farrokhzad, and six American youth.
Professor Karimi Hakak has taught at Rutgers, Towson, and Southern Methodists universities in the U.S., universities of Antwerp in Belgium, Tel Aviv in Israel, and Al-Ghods in Palestine. While in Iran, he taught at University of Tehran, Soore Arts Institute, and Teachers Training College. He presently serves as Professor of Creative Arts at Siena College in upstate New York.
