About the book
Almost annually over 125 years, the football teams of Washington and Washington State have met in November - well, in autumn; now, make that late-summer. That communion has provided more than a final score, it long ago became part of the currency of discussion over back fences, in workplaces, and sports bars. If one could catalog a state's ethos, surely a slice of Washington could be traced to Huskies meeting Cougars.

About the author
Bud Withers, a 45-year veteran of three major Northwest newspapers, has released his sixth book, Too Good to Be Through, an examination of the Apple Cup football rivalry between Washington and Washington State. The book features a breezy, game-by-game exploration of the 125-year series, but more than that, it documents the pranks and frivolity and the unlikely alliances and begrudging friendships of Huskies and Cougars where they live and work.
Withers spent most of a 28-year combined stint at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattle Times covering and columnizing on each school's football program, from Dennis Erickson to Mike Price to Rick Neuheisel. Before that, he wrote sports at the Eugene Register-Guard, with a heavy emphasis on the college scene there.
His previous books include BraveHearts (2002) and Glory Hounds (2016), two looks at the phenomenon of Gonzaga basketball.
Withers has won sportswriter-of-the-year citations in both Oregon and Washington, is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Assn. hall of fame, and a past president of that organization. He lives in Woodinville, Washington, with his wife Velvet.
