This 3 hour class covers a broad overview of topics and techniques related to book repair and the preservation of library collections. This course is geared towards librarians who work primarily with book and paper collections. The first half of the course will be a presentation covering general preservation information, including: environmental monitoring, mold identification and remediation, boxing, and emergency response. The second half of the class will involve hands-on training in 3 basic book repair techniques. All materials needed will be provided. Participants will be given a book to practice their repairs, which they can take home at the end of the course. Hand-outs will also be provided, which detail the topics and training covered in the class, as well as information on additional resources.
This class is hosted by the Henry S. Hall Jr. American Alpine Club Library in partnership with the University of Colorado Boulder University Libraries. It is generously funded by a 2024 City of Golden “Thriving Community Support” grant.
