This event is for anyone interested in folklore or Estonian culture, offering a glimpse into a rich and unique tradition.-------
During the presentation of the book Deals and Deeds, a brand-new English-language collection of Estonian folktales, we will join Merili on a journey into the rich and colorful world of these tales, as well as stories of life in Estonia in earlier times.
Merili and I both believe that folktales continue to resonate with modern readers, and that through identification with the protagonists and the metaphors of their adventures, we can be guided through our reality and our feelings.
No matter whether you are a princess, a devil, a peasant, a king, or a dog; no matter whether you behave well or not, you can find your place in this world.
-------
⭕ What makes this book different?
Unlike many folktale collections that have softened the darker elements, this book preserves the original deeds, no matter how shocking. These acts hold their rightful place in the stories and are as essential as any other part of the narrative.
⭕ The hosts:
Merili Metsvahi, the author of the original book, has been an Associate Professor of Estonian and Comparative Folklore at the University of Tartu. Her research has focused on Estonian and Livonian witch trials, werewolf legends, family history, marriage traditions, and the relationship with nature in pre-modern Estonia. Today, she also leads folktale and heritage tours along Estonia’s scenic nature trails.
Federico is the translator and curator of "Deals and Deeds". He studied at the Brera Academy of Art in Milan and has been immersed in art ever since. Federico has held numerous exhibitions across Europe and has written a novel, "Il Corvo Blu", inspired by Estonian folktales.
