Join us as we celebrate the release of Dr. LinDa Saphan and Nate Hun's new book Remnants from the Past! This filmography is a systematic survey of early Cambodian films that have survived to the modern era. The first Cambodian films were released in the late 1960s, and the industry continued to grow until 1975 when the Khmer Rouge forcibly emptied Phnom Penh and took control of the country. During this period, there were as many as 73 production companies with a total of 446 films made by 1975. Most of these films have been lost to us, and those that have survived have never been cataloged. This book will present information on the production, crew, cast, genre, songs, and central plot of the surviving films as well as insight into the history of the film reels and how or when they were digitized.About the authors:
Dr. LinDa Saphan is a Fulbright Scholar and Professor of Sociology at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, New York City. She is the author of Faded Reels, the Art of Four Cambodian Filmmakers 1960-1975, the lead researcher/associate producer for the documentary film Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll, and executive producer for several other film projects. As a visual artist, she exhibited in several countries. She has published extensively on Cambodian prewar popular music.
Nate Hun is a Cambodian music and film collector. He was the music consultant for several projects including Golden Slumbers directed by Davy Chou and Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll directed by John Pirozzi. Nate also co-founded the Cambodian Vintage Music Archive project. The project aims to preserve and archive original recordings in high fidelity. The project is also helping the artists' surviving family members to obtain intellectual rights to their works. Nate currently works on expanding his collection and dedicates his time sharing his knowledge with a wider audience.
