Slavery and Capitalism offers the first systematic Marxist account of the capitalist character of Atlantic slavery. Drawing on colonial travel writing, planter records, and slave narratives, McNally argues that enslaved labor in plantation economies functioned as capitalist commodity production.
Bringing together history, political economy, and radical abolitionism, the book reframes enslaved people as part of a modern working class, foregrounding their struggles for freedom not as isolated acts of resistance but as labor conflicts over production and reproduction - fundamental to understanding racial capitalism.

Slavery and Capitalism propose la première analyse marxiste systématique du caractère capitaliste de l’esclavage atlantique. À partir de récits de voyage coloniaux, de registres de planteurs et de témoignages d’esclaves, McNally démontre que le travail forcé dans les plantations relevait d’une véritable production capitaliste de marchandises.
En articulant histoire, économie politique et abolitionnisme radical, l’ouvrage montre que les personnes réduites en esclavage formaient une classe ouvrière moderne, et revalorise leurs luttes pour la liberté comme de véritables conflits du travail—essentiels pour comprendre les racines du capitalisme racial.
