Please join us for the book launch of Rodney Aist's monograph, "Walking the Jerusalem Circuit: In the Footsteps of Pilgrims Before the Crusades" at 17:00 IST on Oct 29, 2025 at the Albright (in person only). Post-Event Reception at 18:00 IST.
Abstract: Christian pilgrimage texts before the Crusades provide indication of a standardized route that connected the principal Christian sites of the city. Stations included the Holy Sepulchre, Holy Sion, the Pool of Bethesda, Gethsemane, and the Mount of Olives. Based upon research conducted at the Albright, Walking the Jerusalem Circuit offers an original discussion of the sources, before resourcing a modern iteration of the walk with information on the sites, associated scripture readings, and excerpts from pilgrimage texts. My presentation will focus on the historical sources, with brief reflections on the sites today and contemporary pilgrim practices.
Bio: Rodney Aist is the course director of St George’s College, Jerusalem. A scholar of Jerusalem pilgrimage, his works include The Christian Topography of Early Islamic Jerusalem (2009) and From Topography to Text: The Image of Jerusalem in the Writings of Eucherius, Adomnán and Bede (2018). He is co-editor of the forthcoming Brill volume: Jerusalem Pilgrimage Texts (Reading Medieval Sources).
