
Described as one of the greatest storytellers of our time by award-winning French writer Alain Mabanckou French author/poet Ari Gautier was born to a Malagasy mother and an Indian father and he spent his childhood in the former French colony of Pondicherry.
After spending a few years in France he currently lives in Oslo.
Ari Gautier is the author of Carnet Secret de Lakshmi Le Thinnai and Nocturne Pondichéry three French-language books that creatively blend several languages including French Tamil Sanskrit Pondicherry Creole and English.
Nominated for the prestigious French literary award Le Prix du Printemps du livre du forum de Saint Louis the writer has gained international recognition for his works that provide insight into the country´s history the city´s multicultural dynamism the Indian caste system and the impact of French rule in Pondicherry.
His works translated into Tamil English German Italian and Norwegian are studied in several English and French universities worldwide.
His second novel The Thinnai translated into English by Blake Smith was published in 2021 by Hachette India and was acclaimed by the Indian press.
His first book Lakshmi´s Secret Diary translated into English by Sheela Mahadevan will be published this summer by the prestigious Columbia University in the USA.
His collection of short stories Nocturne Pondichéry published by L´Harmattan in 2021 was translated into English by Roopam Singh and was published in June 2024 by Hachette India.
Ari Gautier has finished a collection of short stories and a poetry anthology awaiting publication.
