About this Event
In collaboration with the Anglo-Somali Society, Kayd presents the launch of Dr. Annette Hoffmann’s Knowing by Ear: Listening to Voice Recordings with African Prisoners of War in German Camps (1915-1918) (Duke University Press, 2024). Dr. Hoffmann is a researcher and curator at the Institute for African Studies at the University of Cologne. She engages with acoustic collections as part of the colonial archive, with orature, relational knowledge production, and colonial history. She will present material from her latest book, Knowing by Ear. A chapter of this book discusses archival traces of Mohamed Nur, a Somali man from Berbera whose history and voice recordings are held in Germany, and which were shown at the MARKK Museum in Hamburg in 2019.
