Description
Bournemouth University is pleased to host the launch of The Swash Channel Wreck: An Archaeological Investigation of a 17th-Century Armed Dutch Merchantman, a major new monograph presenting the results of a decade-long programme of archaeological research.
Between 2005 and 2015, Bournemouth University staff and students led the investigation of the Swash Channel Wreck, a remarkably well-preserved 17th century Dutch merchant vessel discovered off the Dorset coast. This publication represents the culmination of that work and marks the conclusion of one of the most significant maritime archaeological projects ever conducted in the UK.
The research coincides with the recent re-opening of Poole Museum, where many of the artefacts recovered from the wreck are now on public display. Together, the publication and museum exhibition highlight the international significance of the Swash Channel Wreck and Bournemouth University’s leading role in maritime archaeology and maritime history.
The evening will include:
• A public lecture introducing the Swash Channel Wreck and the archaeological investigation
• The official launch of the monograph
• A reception with the opportunity to view artefacts recovered from several wrecks investigated by the maritime archaeologists at BU
