About this Event

Over the last decade, the damage caused by austerity measures across the UK has impacted many lives but most of all the poorest in society, who have borne the brunt. The first edition of Austerity Bites published in 2014 offered on-the-ground reportage and analysis of the early years of one of the most significantly regressive economic strategies of any post-war government. Since then, the dire effects of austerity have worsened with high levels of child poverty and food banks now normalised. The Welfare State has been decimated while any hope that a Labour government would undo the damage is already being called into question as concerns about yet more cuts spread. In this updated edition, Mary reflects on the 14 years of austerity and explores what needs to happen if this cruel and avoidable strategy is to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

Mary O’Hara, who was born in Belfast, is a multi-award winning journalist specialising in social policy. She is also a producer and an author of multiple books and articles on the impact of austerity, poverty and stigma. She is founder of the multiplatform anti-poverty initiative, .
