Ocean Vuong presents The Emperor of Gladness
In conversation with Alexander Chee
Greenlight is thrilled to welcome acclaimed and beloved poet and novelist Ocean Vuong to St. Joseph's to present The Emperor of Gladness, a bighearted novel about chosen family, unexpected friendship, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive. Set in the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut and following cycles of history, memory, and time, the novel explores the profound ways in which love, labor, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life, and what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul. Hallmarks of Ocean Vuong’s writing—formal innovation, syntactic dexterity, and the ability to twin grit with grace through tenderness—are on full display in this story of loss, hope, and how far we would go to possess one of life’s most fleeting mercies: a second chance. Ocean Vuong discusses his work onstage with fellow author Alexander Chee (How To Write An Autobiographical Novel) at this special event.
All tickets include a pre-signed copy of The Emperor of Gladness, to be picked up at the event. St. Joseph's University is located at 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205. More information at .
