Dr. Marlee S. Bunch is an interdisciplinary educator, researcher, collector of stories, advocate for students, seeker of social justice and equity, and lifelong learner. With over eighteen years of teaching experience at the secondary and post-secondary level, she has continuously worked in diverse classrooms and sought to ensure that students receive equitable and rigorous instruction and mentorship.
In her latest book, Unlearning the Hush, Dr. Marlee Bunch draws on oral histories to illuminate the lives of Black female educators who taught before and after desegregation in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In their own voices, these women recount guiding students through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era, sharing stories of teaching, activism, and resilience amid the challenges following Brown v. Board of Education and massive resistance. Bunch highlights how Black educators nurtured community strength and student success while shaping generations to come. Featuring images and poetry, this inspiring work blends memory and history to honor the enduring legacy of Black women in education.
