"Torpedo in the water!" Edward Sierra vividly remembers hearing those terrifying words loudly come across the speakers while submerged aboard a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine in the Mediterranean Sea. Ed joined the United States Navy at age 17, having just graduated from high school in Medford. Upon completion of an intense two-year Naval training program, he reported to the Electrical Division onboard the U.S.S. Billfish SSN- 676.
In this lecture, Ed will review early submarine history and recall his journey--from boot camp in San Diego and naval schools across the country, to his adventure as a nuclear-power-trained electrical operator serving on the U.S.S. Billfish stationed out of New London, Conn.
