An incredibly rare chance to see the greatest jazz stars of the early 40s on 16mm!
About this Event

Artist, animator, musician, and film collector Martha Colburn returns to the Philosophical Research Society (following her sold-out Scopitones evening) with another lovingly curated, very rare compilation screening, this time culled from her incredible collection of 16mm “Soundies”! The earliest examples of music videos, Soundies were produced during a brief window between 1940 and 1946 – providing an entertaining escape from life during WWII, allowing audiences to thrill to jazz, juke, and jive films from the greatest artists of the day.

Precious records of a vital time in American musical history, Soundies preserved rare performances by African American artists, phenomenal performers who had fewer opportunities to feature in mainstream films. These red-hot musical shorts also provided artists wider exposure than was afforded by the segregated venues of the era. Soundies were originally viewed in public places on "Panorams," coin-operated, 16mm rear projection machines – precursors to the French Scopitones video jukeboxes off the 1960s.

This very special evening will include films featuring musical legends including Nat King Cole, Count Basie & His Orchestra, Fats Waller, The Delta Rhythm Boys, Cab Calloway, and Lena Horne (and…to add a bit of diversity, ha…Lawrence Welk!). Plus! A selection of 40s oddity films, including a hillbilly jamboree and a contortionist act – which will be accompanied by a live, in-person performance by renowned contortionist Lena Fumi!

Don’t miss this incredibly rare opportunity to see these smokin’, historic films projected on 16mm film!

Approx. 70mins, 16mm, b&w
