A Touch of Brimstone
An episode cloaked in powdered wigs and sexual menace, set around a secret society that reenacts a grotesque fantasy of Georgian libertinism through ritualised cruelty and enforced roles. Throw in themes of dominance, submission, voyeurism with Mrs Peel dressed as the kinky queen of sin (an outfit she designed herself) and perhaps it’s no surprise that this was the most watched episode on its original showing and remains a favourite of fans.
The House That Jack Built
Mrs Peel is trapped inside a nightmarish, looping country house where nursery rhymes dictate reality and polite domestic spaces become instruments of psychological control. Better still, Diana Rigg is centre stage for the whole episode, depicting Mrs Peel at her best, using her wit, intelligence, and skill to help herself out of the dangerous and surreal predicament she finds herself in.
