Bolognese From The Group Up - Round Two

The Bolognese system of fencing encompasses a wide variety of weapons, ranging from unarmed against a dagger, to the sword in one hand and its secondaries, the spadone and polearms. Of these, the sword in one hand, the so-called “Queen of Weapons”, is the one that best illustrates the essence of fencing principles and provides the foundation for a deep understanding of all the others. So that is where we will start!
In this four-hour introductory course, we will quite literally be working from the ground up, starting with increasingly complex footwork drills, the building blocks of the system, before going through the eight main guards and the angles of attack. From there, we will look at several common blade engagements and how to respond to them, and finish with the essential defences from coda lunga stretta.
There is no prior knowledge assumed, so all levels are welcome! The following equipment is required:
1) A one-handed sword, preferably of the “cut-and-thrust type”, though an arming sword works very well. We will have some loaner swords available. Please note that sabres or rapiers are not appropriate.
2) Fencing mask (preferably with back of the head protection). We do have some loaner masks available
3) Gloves
Any other equipment, such as a fencing jacket, gorget, elbow and knee protection, etc., are certainly recommended, but optional.
The workshop runs from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. The cost is $40.00, and the spaces are limited to 12, so if you are interested, please send me a message so I can add you to the list.
If you have any questions, let me know!
