Due to popular demand, The Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles is pleased to offer another Beginning Bobbin Lace Workshop with Eva Gergely.
Bobbin Lace is the classic lace of Western civilization, captivating virtually every culture since 1500 when it became a very necessary and expensive part of fashionable clothing. It has maintained this role well into the twentieth century, complimentary to fashion-loving women from top to bottom, but not denied to men who also dazzle in it.
Bobbin Lace is a multi-thread technique based on two basic motions working in a plaiting fashion using no more than four threads at a time. The threads worked in the hands, require minimal eye acuteness, making Bobbin Lace accessible to students of all ages.
The class will cover the preparation of materials, the basic motions as well as the basic stitches and grounds based on these motions.
Eva Gergely now brings this technique into the 21st century, where she combines traditional motifs, symbols, and techniques of Hungarian folk culture with modern elements, focusing once again on contemporary fashion in wearable and decorative elements.
Visiting from Hungary, Eva is an artist, singer, designer, and lacemaker, exhibiting at prestigious exhibitions. More of Eva can be seen on Youtube (in Hungarian)
The class fee is $65.00. The Lacis Bobbin Lace Kit is normally $64.00. For registered students, there is a 20% discount ( $51.20 plus tax)The instructor will supply patterns and class notes.
You may register at the museum shop or by phone (510-843-7290) during regular business hours (Monday through Saturday, 12:00 – 6:00 PM.)
