Back by popular demand! Join Nova Conservation & Chattanooga Audubon Society for a once in a lifetime experience.
We’ll spend the morning paddling out to Maclellan Island, a true jewel in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. The island is maintained by Chattanooga Audubon Society, a local nonprofit.
Your contribution to this event helps CAS restore the biodiversity and ecological function of the island, specifically as an bird migration stopover spot.
L2 will provide watercrafts, and we'll launch from under Market St Bridge. Once docked, we will observe research-focused bird banding, a process in which birds are safely extracted from nets and “banded." Bird banding is a common scientific practice in which is a unique marker is harmlessly attached to the bird's leg, and the data collected goes to national records.
Dr. David Aborn from UTC will be leading this experience. He holds a Master Bander permit and has conducted ornithological research for the past 30 years.
Additionally, Laura Marsh, the founder of Nova Conservation, will be present to lead a bird hike around the island, right at the peak of spring migration!
