Created as part of her art and design studies, Emma Armstrong’s Blue Plaques Project takes inspiration from Great Yarmouth’s commemorative plaque scheme, which has marked sites of local and national significance since 1981. Emma researched the stories behind over 150 plaques installed by the Great Yarmouth Local History and Archaeological Society, uncovering moments of resilience, creativity, and change.Each 7.5cm square piece captures the essence of a person, place, or moment in time, using found objects such as driftwood, old maps, and musical scores alongside hand-crafted elements. These intimate works invite viewers to look beyond bricks and mortar, translating the plaques’ historical details into tactile, visual narratives that connect past and present.
The project is both a tribute to the people and places that shaped the town and an invitation to rediscover Great Yarmouth’s heritage with fresh eyes.
