Join Nature Nova Scotia and Friends of Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes on July 6th, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM for an exciting 2-hour guided hike to learn about Mainland Moose conservation including the current threats to the species, the proposed Highway 113, changes in the forest ecosystem, and habitat loss. This 2 km elevated hike will teach you how to identify signs of the species such as tracks, pellets and browse. This hike is specially designed to welcome new Canadians and their families to Nova Scotia’s great outdoors, providing a unique opportunity to connect with and learn about nature. While the event aims to engage new Canadians, everyone is welcome to attend.
During the hike, we will cover:
- Moose habitat
- Threats to the Mainland Moose
- Forest changes
- Proposed Highway 113
- Proposed National Urban Park
- Plants & tree identification
Difficulty level: This moderately challenging hike features uneven ground with exposed roots, sections with large rocks, fallen trees, and a rocky stream to cross. Hikers will climb from the north base of Blue Mountain to the summit. At the summit, you will be rewarded with an unlimited view from the highest point on the Chebucto Peninsula.
