Georgia Oakley's directorial debut asks how one might choose to live when laws and social pressure make honesty seem impossible.
It's 1988, and in the UK Clause 28 (aka Section 28) has just come into effect, making it illegal for local authorities to "promote homosexuality". For teachers, this means it is forbidden to discuss being queer in anything other than negative tones. For queer teachers like Jean (Rosy McEwen), it means having to hide her relationship with Viv (Kerrie Hayes) from colleagues, students and the wider community or risk losing her job. For students like Lois (Lucy Halliday), it means there's little protection from homophobic bullies, and no role models to look up to.
Blue Jean has been nominated for a raft of awards in the UK and internationally.
