Blue Honey plays the entirety of their concept album titled "The Fifth Kind" with support from Space Traveler's Union.
About "The Fifth Kind":
"The Fifth Kind" is an experimental funk, rock, and foley concept album by Blue Honey (Zachary White, Tyler Major, and Nathan Begley) that chronologically follows a veteran spaceman and his two novice sailors as they take up the ancient torch of exploration. Captain Gedata (Major), Cadet Felix (Begley), and Midshipman Orbin (White) have been tasked with collecting information on nearby star systems on a vessel equipped with a primitive and recently-developed warp drive. As the men move forward in their journey, "The Black" proves to be lonely, grueling, and full of unexpected horrors. A simple navigation error has brought them to a snare like no other!
About Blue Honey:
Blue Honey is a quartet from Tucson, Arizona that blends elements of jazz, hip-hop, and funk into a unique, original sound.
The band was formed in 2014 by Zachary White (drums) and Tyler Major (bass), who created the band for the sole purpose of writing incredibly intricate musical etudes via lesser-used musical scales, non-linear rhythms, and odd time signatures. When Nathan Begley (guitar) joined the band in late 2014, the band then began writing original music (still under the influence of odd musical characteristics) in the style of progressive rock.
Over time, the three began adding the influences of other genres to their original music like jazz, funk, lofi, hiphop, and psychedelic rock which is the culmination of what Blue Honey is today.
The experimental quartet has been making a name for itself in the Tucson scene since their first musical release on Christmas of 2020 ("Sessions, vol. 1"), combining technical knowledge with a desire to do something very different in their live and studio performances. Since then, the group has blended genres and featured other artists, creating a veritable fruit salad of musical flavors in their live and studio performances.
Blue Honey is Zachary White (percussion), Nathan Begley (guitar), Tyler Major (bass), and Keaton Wilson (keyboards).
About Space Traveler's Union:
Ryan Wheless is a saxophonist and clarinetist who has been shaped by a world of influences, both within and beyond music. Originally from Seattle, the young kid moved to the Arizona desert, not far from the Grand Canyon, where he spent his formative years in the mountain town of Flagstaff. Amidst mountain hikes and wild camping, the seeds of his musical obsession began to take root.
Despite being too young to play at most venues, Wheless managed to sneak into gigs with jam bands and indie folk ensembles. His talent caught the eye of Berklee College of Music, where he was invited to further his studies in Boston. Often travelling to New York City during this time, the beating heart of the Jazz music's capital would take hold of his tastes and under the guidance of mentors Lauren Sevian and Harry Skoler, his obsession for jazz music and improvisation grew. However, drawn by the call of family, friends, and the expanse of the desert, Ryan found himself in Tucson, where his passion for jazz found a new home, fueled by a tonne of inspiration from the luminaries of the NYC jazz scene.
This led to the formation of space travelers union - a collective dedicated to pushing the boundaries of acoustic and electronic fusion with the members comprising all the best musicians that Ryan had met in his travels.
Their debut album, 'the trials of bunny john' was conceived and recorded in just one week at EastWest Studios in LA. A challenge embraced by the band, many tracks were improvised live in the studio, resulting in this ridiculously brilliant ten-track collection by end of play.
Influenced by the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, Yussef Dayes, and Toro y Moi, the new album arrives like a breath of fresh air, a welcome reprieve from the factory-mill of releases out there. The individual tracks are a delightful addition to any playlist fitting any time of the day whilst the album's flow rewards full and repeated listens.
