Blue Grassy Knoll began in the mid 90's as a barnstorming punk gypsy-bluegrass band based in Melbourne's inner north. Wielding banjo, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, guitar and double bass, they quickly built a reputation as high energy performers unfettered by musical genres or the traditions their name implied. Fronted by the charismatic and flame-haired Simon Barfoot, they regularly gigged at The Punters Club and Empress Hotel, often putting on themed nights such as the Blue Funky Knoll, (playing their regular set but plugged and phunky) the Blue Movie Knoll (playing soundtracks to 70’s 8mm nudie films), the Blue Spicy Knoll (a Spice Girls Tribute) and even the Blue Grassy Noel (Christmas songs with an angry twist). They also developed a second career writing and performing filmscores to classic Buster Keaton silent movies, a project that toured all around Australia, before being whisked off to the Edinburgh Festival, where they were ‘discovered’ and spent the late 90’s and early 00’s touring the world, including Broadway, The Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, Ireland, China, Korea, and of course New Zealand. Sent into voluntary liquidation after a particularly monotonous 4 month regional tour of the USA, they have reformed a dozen times this century to continue writing and performing silent Buster Keaton movies, but this will be their first (and possibly only) gig as a band, returning to the fabled Punter’s Club, where they launched their only band CD Thomas Murphy’s Stag Party in 1999. Their hair may have thinned, their eyesight dimmed, but the chemistry between these old mates has never waned. Come see this inner-Melbourne cult band attempt to resurrect and then trash their own reputation in the one night.
