For many, the holiday season can be bittersweet—moments of joy mingling with grief, loneliness, or distress. These feelings may surface unexpectedly or settle in as the holidays draw near. In a culture that often pressures us to “put on a happy face,” First United Methodist Church, Alexandria offers a compassionate alternative: a sacred space where every emotion, including sorrow, is welcome. Our Chapel will be open as a place of refuge whenever the church doors are open. When the season feels “too much,” you’re invited to step aside, breathe, and simply *be*. Blue Christmas in the Chapel provides an opportunity to lean on God’s love, trusting that grace meets us in our vulnerability and gently guides us toward healing and wholeness—within ourselves, in our relationships, and in creation.
Light a candle. Sit with Scripture. Read or write a prayer. These small acts become expressions of faith in the transforming love of our ever-present God. The Chapel meditations, which change each week throughout the Advent/Christmas season, offer a quiet pause in the holiday rush and space for honest reflection, lament, and hope.
The weekly meditations are designed to help you acknowledge your laments, find solace, and experience God’s comforting presence.
