Elevating school, family, caregiver and community collaborations to educate and activate Arizona to prevent sexual violence against youth with disabilities.
Students with disabilities across Arizona have multiple needs that affect their ability to access safety and healing after experiencing or being exposed to sexual violence.
Sexual violence is an umbrella term that includes sexual abuse, sexual harassment, rape, sexual coercion, sexual grooming, sex trafficking, etc. Sexual violence is perpetrated through threats, coercion, control, force, exploitation, deceit, physical or mental incapacitation, and /or abuse of power/authority.
The Safety for All Summit will address how school professionals, in collaboration with parents and caregivers, can support and empower students with disabilities who have experienced or been exposed to sexual violence victimization.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The Safety for All Summit is an in-person, learning and community building opportunity featuring a keynote speaker, two interactive learning sessions, a panel discussion, lunch, and exhibitors. (Full agenda will be sent to registrants prior to the Summit.)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The Safety for All Summit is designed for:
- special education teachers
- parents/caregivers of students with disabilities and special needs
- other trusted adults who engage with youth with disabilities in the community
SUMMIT GOALS: Through the sharing of ideas, knowledge, capabilities, and successes, this Summit aims to strengthen the capacity of individuals, schools, and community organizations to ensure that youth sexual violence victims with disabilities have access to comprehensive healing and justice services.
The workshop sessions and panel discussion will directly address the topics through the lens of youth with disabilities.
When school professionals and parents/caregivers understand the risk and protective factors associated with preventing and responding to the vicimization of individuals with disabilites, they can better recognize abuse while it’s happening, respond appropriately and without bias and reframe policies and practices to ensure students have equitable access to prevention and support services.
WORKSHOP TOPICS: The following topics/competencies will be covered throughout the Summit:
Recognize:
- Define sexual violence
- Understand how power/control/sexual violence impacts the lives of youth and individuals with disabilities
- Identify victimization vs. consensual sexual activity
- Learn how to support youth victims with varying levels of independence and needs, in order to provide relevant adaptive support
- Review the ADA and laws related to reporting sexual violence victimization.
Respond:
- Advocacy skills to support safety/healing/autonomy
- Provide immediate safety planning
- Know when to file a mandatory report
- Navigate guardianship and confidentiality
Remove barriers to help-seeking/reporting:
- Support victims who want to make a report to law enforcement
- Create safe and inclusive spaces for disclosing/help-seeking
- Navigate complex and potentially dangerous situations
- Understand how cultural barriers impact seeking and receiving help for
Refer:
- Know how to provide a warm handoff to internal/external trauma-informed services, equipped to serve victims with disabilities
- Promote self-advocacy/empowerment
