Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter met as children in West Virginia and forged a deep creative bond that later evolved into Bloodkin after relocating to Athens, Georgia around 1986. By the early ’90s, their songwriting catalog had blossomed to over 300 songs and they'd formally adopted the name Bloodkin . They released their debut album Good Luck Charm in 1994, produced by Johnny Sandlin, followed by Creeperweed and several others produced by venerable figures like John Keane and David Barbe . Known for dark, poetic lyrics and a rock‑and‑roll aesthetic often described as “Stones‑y,” Hutchens—especially—earned acclaim for his storytelling and evocative voice, often compared stylistically to Elton John, Tom Waits, and Lou Reed .
Though beloved by a devoted following, much of Bloodkin’s wider exposure came via peers in the Athens scene—most notably Widespread Panic, who covered several Bloodkin songs like “Can’t Get High” and “Makes Sense to Me,” helping bring those compositions to broader audiences . Following Hutchens’ passing in May 2021, Carter chose to continue the band as a communal project, inviting longtime collaborators such as John Neff, Aaron Phillips, Betsy Franck, and Tori Pater to carry forward the music and legacy with live performances and new recordings.
