We have a total lunar eclipse, or 'blood moon', happening early in the morning on Friday March 14, so if we have clear skies we are going to host a watch party at the University of Waterloo's Parking Lot E off of Seagram Drive by Waterloo Park for those interested in seeing this spectacular celestial event! The eclipse begins at 11:57pm with the penubral phase, during which the moon will not dim very much and most people won't notice a change. The moon will begin to move into the umbra, the darkest portion of the Earth's shadow and be in partial eclipse at 1:09am. The total eclipse phase lasts from 2:26am to 3:31am, returning to a partial eclipse until 4:47am. It will exit the umbra at that point and be in the penumbra again until 6am.
All you need to view a total lunar eclipse is your eyes, but if you have a pair of binoculars or a telescope they can enhance the experience! We will have a telescope or two on hand to share views. Please dress very warm in layers, bring hot drinks, etc. if you decide to join us, as it will still be winter and could be very cold overnight. You may wish to only join us for the climax of the event from around 2am-4am. Please watch the weather forecast, as we will cancel the event if it will be cloudy.
