India Gailey, cello
Peter Togni, pipe organ
Jeff Reilly, bass clarinet
Blackwood - the emissaries of celestial space in Halifax join up with cellist India Gailey to celebrate the release of their new album PASSAGES and bring you a night of improvisations and rich tapestries of original sounds.
Soaring organ, silken cello and moody bass clarinet combine to create the sound of PASSAGES. These three musicians together could be described as a cross between the minimalist composer Arvo Part and maybe a wisp of a dream that would inspire Bram Stoker.
"Sonically haunting, sophisticated, euro-jazz minimalism" Selwin Harris, Jazzwise UK
The heart of Blackwood resides within the deep musical simpatico between organist/pianist Peter-Anthony Togni and bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly. Inspired by plainchant, improvisation and holy minimalism, their uniquely lyrical approach to music straddles the boundary areas between jazz and classical. Over the past 25 years these musical soul searchers have released 8 albums on labels like the ECM new series and Warner Classics, presented hundreds of concerts around the world and in their home city of Kjipuktuk/Halifax, and garnered 4 Juno nominations between them.
In this concert they are honoured and delighted to be joined by India Gailey. India is a cellist, composer, and improviser based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, NS. she was named by CBC as one of "30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30," and has toured across the Western hemisphere as both a soloist and collaborator, most often in the realms of classical and experimental music.
