About this Event
Black String Band Ensemble Practice Group
Once again, the Black Banjo Reclamation Project is hosting in-person space that centers Black folks on their journey of banjo connection and reclamation. This year, BBRP is joining in partnership with the Freight & Salvage in a new way! One Friday every month will be a dedicated in-person space for ensemble practice space of music in the Black String Band Tradition across genres but focusing on old-time, traditional jazz, blues, bluegrass, and any folk-adjacent music. Hannah Mayree will host this space with occasional guest hosts or instructors. Additional dates may also be added to the schedule. At 5 pm to 6 pm we will meet for our community lesson which is intended to be a space to learn to play together and can include all string instruments to build our ability to play in formal and casual settings. * Please note The Black String Band Practice Group is a space prioritizing Black musicians particularly to play music from traditional folk genres that can include singing and original music. Thank you for supporting this intention. Please check our event page on our website for open and BIPOC jam sessions as well as other public community events!
These tickets are offered at sliding scale costs to Black folks. The suggested donation is between $5-$25 per session and the whole year of sessions can be purchased in bulk from $60-$300. Average cost is between $120-180. This is all on the honor system and we are trusting that you will pay what you can knowing that we are offering this at the most accessible rates to accommodate everyone who wants to join regardless of class and access to funds. Work trade and scholarships are available. We appreciate your generosity in supporting this unique programming and being in reciprocity with our team!
