Step into the ancient walls of The York Medical Society on the 6th of April, to be transported to an unusual place, where every corner invites exploration, interaction, and promises dark delights! This is Black Phillip's Black Market; a concept that goes beyond mere shopping! A multi-sensory, ground-breaking retail event. A direct crossing of a pop-up art exhibition and a market!
Like a psychotic Santa Claus, Black Phillip works extremely hard on these events. Firstly, it scours the land to find the very best independent traders, ensuring that their items for sale are unique, unusual, hand-made and of the highest quality. It then sets about breathing life (or death, depending on how you look at it) into the three rooms of The York Medical Society. Each room is themed, decorated and tells some sort of story, using videography, custom soundscapes, scent profiles and theatrical lighting.
At this market, you are encouraged to get involved and ask questions. We only work with the very best traders and all items for sale are hand-made. This means that every single one of our marvellous traders will be able to tell you anything you want to know about their items! Visiting the stall of one of our traders becomes a personal shopping experience, where you can go for a wander into the artistic mind of each trader you speak to. This isn't a market where you just buy items; you are investing in an experience and supporting an independent trader!
As well as our artistic traders, we also have a gluten free and vegan cake stall! Come early to avoid disappointment here - at the last market the sweet treats on offer sold out very quickly!
Black Phillip's Black Market isn't just about shopping. Firstly, we aim to provide an unusual event for the people of York (and tourists!) to enjoy. But our main goal with this market is to offer a platform for the unseen and overlooked alternative creative people to showcase their talents.
So come along to The York Medical Society on Sunday 6th of April, between 10am and 4pm, to see York's most bizarre market experience!
