About this Event
of the Beautiful Creole Apaches (a New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe) leads a series of workshops to introduce basic skills that are central to Black Masking Indian traditions, including sewing beads, sewing stones, and sewing sequins.
- APRIL 22: Introduction to Beading
- MAY 6: Introduction to Stones
- MAY 20: Introduction to Sequins
Each of the three workshops will run from 2 to 6 p.m., beginning with an introduction to basic sewing and beading techniques. The second half of the second and third workshops will focus on introducing stones and sequins. Participants are welcome to come whenever and to as many or few of the workshops as they are able to make.
Through these workshops, you will learn how to sew, and you will learn about the history and traditions of Black Masking Indians, how a suit is designed and created, and what it means to mask. See a suit and other artwork by Big Chief Beautiful up close. Light refreshments provided.
All events are donation-based, and free for participants 21 and under. Youth are especially welcome! Donations help to cover exhibition and material costs.
This workshop is part of The Legacy of Central City, an art installation and public program that explores the cultural, civic, and environmental legacies of Central City. The exhibit is open from February 2022 until June 2022. Follow civicstudio.coop on Instagram for up-to-date info on the exhibit and public program.
