The Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room and the Athens Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) are partnering in a celebration of African Americans in Labor with focus on Black librarians in honor of ASALH's founder Carter G. Woodson's birthday, December 19, 1875.Join us for a presentation and panel discussion on the importance of Black Librarians and allies asking questions like: What does it really mean to be a librarian? What is the history of the Dunbar Branch Library opened in 1942 for Black Athenians? And what are some of the challenges facing librarians today?
Speakers include:
- Niké Shimobi-Obijuru, Library Manager, Athens-Clarke County Public Library
- Chelsee Dickson, Assistant Director of Academic Engagement and Instruction, Scholarly Publishing & Research, Kennesaw State University
- Tamika Strong, Manager, Reference and Research Division, Auburn Avenue Research Library (Fulton County)
- Shona Foster, Instructional Technology and Digital Learning Director, North East Georgia RESA
- P. Toby Graham, University Librarian and Associate Provost, University of Georgia
A table of Banned Books and other selections by African American authors will be available to purchase after the event. Proceeds will benefit the Athens Branch of ASALH.
