Join us for an insightful Black History Now lecture by Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, Norfolk State University professor and founder of the Joseph Jenkins Roberts Center. Dr. Newby-Alexander will explore the history of Lord Dunmore’s Ethiopian Regiment, a group of approximately 300 enslaved Black men who answered the British governor’s 1775 call to arms in exchange for the promise of freedom. These men, comprising the Revolutionary War's first Black-centered combat unit, wore uniforms emblazoned with the words “Liberty to Slaves.”
This lecture will examine their motivations, their wartime experiences, and the challenges they faced in securing their freedom after the war. This Black History Now special event is free and open to the public.
