After an 8 years, the Black Bottom Street View exhibit returns to Bert’s Warehouse – a community pillar for Detroit’s historic Black Bottom neighborhood! The exhibit will be available for free public viewing from July 6th - 28th, 2024 at Bert’s Warehouse located at 2727 Russell Street, Tuesday - Sunday 11am - 7pm. BBSV is an immersive, panoramic reconstruction of 20 blocks of the historic Black Bottom community, which shows a snapshot of life in the neighborhood right before it was demolished. The panoramas stitch together over 2,000 archival photographs from the Burton Historical Collection, taken from 1949 – 1950 by the City of Detroit as part of the eminent domain process that led to Black Bottom’s demolition. Despite facing challenges such as segregation and poverty, the residents of Black Bottom created a thriving cultural hub and center for Black owned business and culture. This exhibit is a nod to the vibrant community that once thrived in Detroit named after the dark, fertile marsh soils. Our hope is to continue to elevate the history of this historic Black Detroit neighborhood by honoring the legacy and stories of its former residents.
Mark your calendars for our exhibit opening celebrations on Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 12 pm to 3pm at Bert’s Warehouse! We have several other community events planned throughout the month of July, so please stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks! We are also seeking donors and event/exhibit sponsors. If you are interested, please contact Lex at [email protected] to learn more about our sponsorship opportunities.
