Workshop Tutor: John Arnison:
John has many years experience as a tutor at what is now Leeds Arts University. Specialising in portrait and landscape photography, John worked at the BBC Television Centre for 10 years before freelancing for various charities and his work has appeared in various publications. A resident of Yorkshire for 20 years, he has produced a large body of work that he has been told 'redefines the English landscape'. He has an MA in Creative Practice from Leeds Arts University and has work in the permanent collections of the V&A, National Portrait Gallery, Cecil House, Friends House London and private collections worldwide.
Workshop Day & Time: Saturday Morning: 10:00 to 4:30. (This includes a half-hour break for lunch. We do not provide lunch but there are numerous local shops nearby selling sandwiches, etc.)
Age Requirement: This is an adult education course - you must be aged 18 or over to enrol.
Cancellation of Course:
By Aire Street Darkroom: We reserve the right to cancel this workshop if necessary. In the event of cancellation we will give as much notice as possible and refund the workshop fee in full or credit that amount against a later workshop or darkroom course if you prefer that alternative.
By You: If you wish to cancel your place then we will refund your workshop fee, net of Eventbrite commission, provided that you give us at least 7 days advance notice of cancellation.
Required: You will need to bring with you a selection of 35mm or medium format pre-developed black and white film negatives. It is suggested that you bring a lab coat to protect your clothes, a notepad and pen and a folder to take your prints away in.
Provided: All necessary wet chemicals and 5 sheets of resin coated multigrade paper for printing from your negatives. (Extra sheets can be purchased on the day if required).
Course Outline: This workshop is intended for people who have used a black & white photography darkroom in the past and want a guided reintroduction to the skills and techniques involved in order to successfully print from black & white negative film.
The aim is for all students on this workshop to understand and become comfortable in the use of a black and white enlarger and darkroom chemistry. The workshop will cover the following topics:
· Mixing print processing chemicals safely.
· Guidance on print enlarger controls and operation.
· Introduction to multigrade printing paper and which filter grade to select according to the contrast of the negative selected for printing.
· Making a contact print sheet.
· Identification of negatives suitable for enlargement printing.
· How to make test prints.
· ‘Dodging & burning” techniques used to improve print quality.
· Print washing.
· Use of alternative print drying techniques and equipment.
· End of session safe disposal of chemical mixes and cleaning of equipment ready for subsequent sessions.
