About this Event

Our Sunday rambles usually have three levels of walk, strenuous (A), moderate (B) or leisurely (C), led by Birmingham Ramblers group leaders. Join us and enjoy a great day of social walking with our friendly members.

Please note: Our walks are often on rough tracks and rights of way through fields, woodland and hills. Walkers should preferably wear walking boots and other clothing suitable for the weather. Unless otherwise described, please bring a packed lunch and refreshments for the day.

This Sunday walk has 3 levels of walk:

  • A Walk: 11.5 miles with 1,900 ft of climbing
  • B Walk: 9.5 miles with 1,300 ft of climbing.
  • C Walk: 7.25 miles with about 750ft initial ascent

Walk leaders:

  • A Walk: Andy Bates
  • B Walk: Kate Chester
  • C Walk: Eva Hyde

Walk details:

  • A Walk: Circular from Cleobury North. Picnic Lunch. From the Car park we head west via various paths through the woodlands until we hit a pubic path which takes us up onto Abdon Burf, at 540 metres high. From the top we follow the Shropshire way to Burwarton pole we then head along the flank of the hill dropping down to pick up the Jack Mytton way, which we follow for a short while. We then head east all the time walking around the Clees, until we reach the Shropshire way again and climb up to Clee Burf; from here we head to Boyne water and start heading down hill to leave the Clees. We walk around Burwarton Park to reach Burwarton , if there is time we will call in at a Inn. From Burwarton we head back to Cleobury North.
  • B Walk: Circular from Cleobury North. Meander around the North of Brown Clee, then ascend South to reach the top of Brown Clee - the highest point in Shropshire. Then follow the Shropshire Way South to Burwarton Pole. Continue South past Boyne Water. Then down East and then North along a flat track, before descending through Burwarton Park to the village of Burwarton, where there may be a chance to visit the pub. Finally a mile North through grassy fields back to starting point in Cleobury North. Picnic lunch. Maps: Explorer 217, Landranger 138.
  • C Walk: Mainly paved or stony track, no stiles. The route starts near Banbury Farmhouse, at 1050 ft, about 2 miles south-west of Cleobury North. The initial section is the steepest, climbing 500 ft over 0.8 mile along a stony track and then through woodland. The route flattens for a while, passing alongside a wood and a small lake, after which we begin to get extensive views of the countryside to the east. We cross into heathland, covered in heather and bilberries, with increasing views in the other direction. The final ascent to the top of Brown Clee Hill occurs gradually, over 1 mile, yielding a panoramic view. We descend through the heath, retaining the views for 0.7 miles. We then follow a path along the edge of a wood, eventually going down through the wood. Emerging from this we continue along a paved track between trees. At a cross track, we can continue 0.8 mile to a pub at Burwarton. Returning from the pub to the cross-roads we continue a short way in the opposite direction, by a field and then down a farm track through two fields, possibly with cows. We go through the farmyard and then across a grassy meadow to the post office and shop at Cleobury North, and the coach.

There are a limited number of total places for the walks, which is set by the capacity of the coach. Whilst we hope that everyone will be able to be accommodated on their walk of choice, the allocation of places for each walk will have to be done on the day. No-one will be expected to walk at a higher grade than they prefer - thus, for example, if you prefer the B walk you will not be asked to join the A walk but may be asked to join the C walk. The booking form allows you to specify your preferred walk.

It will only be possible to join the walk by coach, which will be picking up at 09.00 at the layby at the side of St. Chad’s Cathedral, Queensway, Birmingham B4 6EU. The coach fare will be £15 with 3 options for payment:

  • Cash on the day in an envelope with your name and the date of the walk. We are unable to give change for cash payments
  • Cheque on the day, made payable to COBRA
  • Bank transfer in advance of the walk

For payment by bank transfer the walk coordinator will contact you about a week in advance of the walk with bank details. For payments on the day, please ensure that these are placed in the payment box on the coach before the departure; this means that there will be no close personal contact nor any handling of the money when making the payment.

Note that you cannot pay the coach fare through our Eventbrite account. Your booking for the walk will still show £0.00 but you do have to pay the coach £15 fare on or before the day of the walk.

Bookings for this walk will close at 06.00 on Monday 8 August 2022
