About this Event

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DURATION OF THIS EVENT SHOWN ABOVE IS ONLY APPROXIMATE AND CANNOT BE GUARANTEED; IT WILL DEPEND ON FACTORS SUCH AS THE WEATHER AND THE WALKING PACE OF THE GROUP.

Join this leisurely ramble with a Birmingham Ramblers group leader and enjoy social walking with our friendly members.

It is very helpful for the walk leader to have prior knowledge of numbers that will be on this walk. We ask you to complete this very brief form to help with our planning of the walk to ensure that we can safely accommodate all who wish to join us. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement when you submit this form, and also a reminder of the details 2 days before the walk.

If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know either by following the View and manage your order online link in your confirmation email and then selecting your order or by sending an email to [email protected] - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you.

Walk leader: Alan Daw

This is a leisurely 5-mile stroll around the historic town and green spaces of Warwick, including a visit to the famous gardens of Mill Street and Hill Close. This walk visits 2 gardens with entry fees which must be paid individually on the walk. Admission to the Mill Garden is £3.00 (cash only, ideally exact change) and entry to Hill Close Gardens £5.00 (card payment preferred). Due to these garden visits we require advance booking for this walk, and numbers are strictly limited to 20 pre-booked walkers, including the leader.

MEET THE WALK LEADER AT MOOR STREET STATION BY 10.25 am. Train departs 10.45 am., arrives Warwick station 11.13 am. Standard return rail fare £9.80.  Please note that travel by train is strongly recommended since car parking facilities near Warwick station are at a premium.

From the station we stroll through Priory Park towards the town centre, passing St. Mary's Church and Oken House as we walk beside the outer walls of Warwick Castle. We venture onto High Street, passing Lord Leycester's hospital before reaching picturesque Mill Street. At the end of the street is the “Mill Garden” (admission £3 - cash), a small but perfectly formed half acre plot on the banks of the River Avon, dramatically situated beneath the walls of Warwick Castle. After our visit to the garden we soon arrive at St. Nicholas's Park, and our walk continues alongside the river and loops around the park before we take a break for lunch - there are refreshments and public conveniences available at this point. After lunch we continue on a route through the town until we arrive at the racecourse, beside which are nestled “Hill Close Gardens” (£5 – card payment preferred). These are a series of sixteen hedged pleasure gardens created in 1845, and originally tended by local Victorian townsfolk as a means of escaping crowded town life. Now grade II listed, the gardens have been lovingly restored and are nationally recognised. Refreshments are available in the tearooms. After our tour of the gardens, we return via Priory Park back to the station

Expressions of Interest for this walk will close at 06.00 on Thursday 29 July. After this, please email [email protected] to enquire about any late availability for the walk.
