About this Event

Join FBC’s Jeana and Martha at Jamaica Bay NWR and learn about all the ways you can spot some of the most overlooked birds in North America. Martha and their colleagues Purbita, Stephanie, Joanna, and Brooke founded The Galbatross Project in 2019 to document all of the ways that one could identify a female bird of a particular species, from plumage to vocalization to behavior and beyond. What we learned is that looking for female birds completely changes the way you approach birding and the outdoors—in our opinion for the better.

Plus it’s also spring so that means we’ll probably see some really cool shorebirds in Jamaica Bay, hear baby Osprey yelling for unprocessed fish sticks, and maybe even say hi to a Clapper Rail.

Note: Because JBNWR has poison ivy, ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, carnivorous grasses (not really, but the leaves are still really sharp), and other natural hazards, participants should wear closed-toe shoes. Long pants tucked into socks are recommended. We will have DEET insect repellent on hand. Masks are required for everyone because the pandemic isn’t over.

Update * May 28th - We have decided to still hold the event! Details will be sent to attendees later this evening .

Martha Harbison (they/them) has been known to whisper words of encouragement to White-throated Sparrows who can't quite get their songs right. They will manufacture any excuse to get out of the office to take someone birding. In addition to their work with Feminist Bird Club, they are a co-founder of The Galbatross Project

Jeana Fucello (she/her) works for Discovery Channel by day, and birds also by day, but earlier. She is a chair of Feminist Bird Club, and leads walks for new birders that are both informative and stupid. She works hard to pass on her deep appreciation for birds and nature through the mediums of song and tears.
