Volunteer with Grassroots Ecology and the Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance to improve habitat for wildlife!
About this Event

Volunteer outside with Grassroots Ecology and the Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance as SCVBA celebrates of 100 years of conservation and community! We will spend our time together caring for our restoration areas by pruning native plants and weeding invasive species, before embarking on a guided birding walk (~0.5 mile on flat unpaved and paved trails). Volunteers should expect to walk on and off trail on uneven ground, kneel or sit on kneeling pads, and use small hand tools, all while learning about the biodiversity of our region.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s McClellan Ranch Preserve page to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All participants must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Participants age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.

Parking: 22221 McClellan Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014, park in the main parking lot in front of the meadow. Additional parking can be found in the overflow lot (located to the left of the main entrance).

Alternate Transportation: The closest bus stop (via VTA route 51) is approximately 1 mile away from the preserve. (Note: this route may not run on the weekend). The surrounding neighborhood is bike-friendly and there are plenty of safe places to lock bikes.

Meeting Space: We will meet at the picnic tables at the front of the meadow. This site has multi-stall gender-specific restrooms, as well as a water fountain/bottle filling station.

Prepare for Working Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)
  • Snacks, if desired
  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty
  • Hat/sunscreen
  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
  • Plan for potential exposure to sun, poison oak, ticks, prickly plants

We will provide gloves, tools, light refreshments, and binoculars.
