Join Ranger Jonah for a two-mile walk on the trails of Mason Mill Park to see what birds are active.
About this Event

Description: Come walk with Ranger Jonah to see what birds are active at Mason Mill Park. All levels of birders are welcome. Binoculars and comfortable footwear are recommended.

What to expect: We will gather in the parking lot near the Mason Mill playground and walk the perimeter of the park looking for birds in this transitional area. Our route then takes us along the boardwalk that leads to the wetlands where we'll continue birding. At the end, we'll recap all the bird species we've observed. Ranger Jonah all provides instruction on binocular skills and bird identification by sight and sound. The full program lasts 2.5 hours.

Program leader: Your guide will be Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park.

Where to meet: Find Ranger Jonah in the parking lot near the Mason Mill playground (1340 McConnell Dr).

What to bring: Wear comfortable footwear, dress for the weather, and bring a refillable water bottle.

Restrooms: Public restrooms near the playgrond are closed for the winter. Bathrooms are available at DeKalb Tennis Center when the Pro Shop is open (top of the purple pyramid).

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for adults and older children, but all ages are welcome.

Dogs: This program is NOT appropriate for dogs, so please leave your pup at home.

Weather contingency: This program will be canceled if there is rain or other inclement weather.

Walking distance: 2 miles

Exposure: This walk is half under shaded tree canopy and half in full sun.

Trail surface & accessibility: This program stays on durable surfaces (concrete & boardwalk) the whole time. There are a few places where the grade is slightly above 5%. Trail width is greater than 10 feet and curb cuts provide appropriate transitions between surfaces. Boardwalk railings are 5 feet tall, but gaps between rails allow for obstructed views.
