Monet loved painting outside (plein air) and was fascinated by how light affects color. Although famous for his series of paintings of haystacks and lily pads, Monet painted many winter landscapes. This lesson has been inspired by his painting The Magpie. In the lesson, students will focus on color, implied form, and texture as they create their own winter landscape, featuring beautiful birch trees.Date: Sunday, November 9

Artist Instructor Bio: Raka Kingsland is the Lead Art Teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools, where she teaches visual art to students in grades Kβ5. Certified to teach Kβ12, Raka has been inspiring young artists for over eight years. She earned her degree in Special Education and Art Education from Valparaiso University and is
passionate about making art accessible and meaningful for all learners. Originally born in India and raised in Indiana, Raka brings a unique perspective to her classroom, weaving together culture, storytelling, and creativity. She believes art is not only a way for students to explore technique and expression but also a tool to build confidence, community, and a lifelong appreciation for creativity.
